2018, chapter 19: ‘ U + Ur Hand’ by P!nk (nr. 131)

It has been a few years since Chainsmoker and Little Mix turned their backs on following society’s rules.

One late night, they’re dressed up and going to a bar. They know the barman, so he knows not to keep them waiting outside. They start the evening off with six shots.

That’s when a dickhead puts his hand on Little Mix and starts hitting on her. She tells him to go away because he doesn’t really want to mess with her tonight. She’s not here for his entertainment and was perfectly fine until he walked into her life. He can keep his drink, and just give her the money instead.  He does.

Later, around midnight, Little Mix is very drunk and dancing by herself. The guy comes back. She tells him that he’s out of luck and orders him to back off.

He tries to convince her by telling her, that his friends bet him five bucks to get her as soon as she entered. He’d like to win. She tells him that he can tell them whatever he wants, as long as he quits spilling his drink on her.

Judging by the way he’s high-fiving his friends, he let them think it was a success, even though he’s probably going home alone.

108: ‘Lose It’ by Oh Wonder

Sara has been messing with an ex-boyfriend’s emotions as revenge. That has however reminded her, that she hasn’t felt this kind of intimacy in a long time. Now she misses it.

So she goes out and finds someone to dance with. She doesn’t even know their name, but she gets the sense of closeness. Her dance partner is so skinny, she can feel their bones beneath their skin. She feels a blood rush in the hazy glow, her heart skips a beat.

Her dance partner feels it too. They look at her wide-eyed. There is a spark between them, a fire in a silver dream. It’s a simple connection, presence in its most basic state.

86: ‘Don’t Let Me Get Me’ by P!nk

Fergie  enjoyed going to bars way before Will seduced her into his way of partying because it was a break from her mess of a life. Never the best at anything, a teacher’s pet only in the way that she dated them, and her parents wasted no time telling her how she was wasting hers by doing everything wrong.

She let it get to her. She couldn’t stand herself and wasted even more time insulting herself in the mirror.

She did enjoy singing, so she decided to find happiness in that. But She was soon told to change everything about herself to become a pop star. So she did, but it wasn’t enough. She was just compared to other, better pop stars – and that based on being all pretty, which she didn’t want to be.

So there she was, hating her dream job. She needed a break, so she started going out to bars on her own. Here she might not be herself, but she could pretend to be more successful and have complete control of the situation.

But then Will came along. Going out with him was different. She was completely out of control, but very much herself – and loving it.
