2018, chapter 32: ‘America’s Sweetheart’ by Elle King (nr. 144)

Bruno is a Heathen. He bonds with his recruiter. Her hometown said she was too loud and she’d never be the poster type. But she wasn’t going to change for anyone. So she lit a match and burned it down.

She’s coarse and likes it. She drinks too much and wears old boots. She’s got bad tattoos and a chip in her front teeth. She is cold-hearted and breaks the hearts of every man she’s been with (causing them to say that she has no soul).

She’s still loud. She still likes blowing things up and getting her hands dirty – and now she can do it for a cause.

Bruno comments on her behaviour after he has won her respect.

She replies cheerily: “what do you want from me? I’m not America’s sweetheart. You love me anyway.”

32: ‘Just Like Fire’ by P!nk

Pink has always had a fire burning in her. She was an ambitious young woman. She wanted it all. She worked hard to become the leader of the Movers and Maids, her dance crew.

As she watches her old home burn down with her dog lying  next to her, she thinks back on the day, she got the position.

She won it in an audition, where many others took part to. Previously they had not had a leader, but now they felt the need for it. But she won the spot, partly because she had already been unofficial leader many times, partly because of the dance, she danced at the audition. She danced like madness and magic,  a colourful charade, with many high kicks to prove her skills as a dancer. She had a lot to prove because the team didn’t think she could lead them properly. They called it impossible. They laughed at her. But she proved them wrong with ease.

Like that day was the beginning of something new, so is this fire. She’s going to disappear before They come back (and she’s kind of have to leave soon actually). She will run her own life instead of having others telling her, what she can and cannot do. No one is going to laugh at her and put out her fire. If she can light up the world up for just one day, like she did at her audition, she’ll be free.

As she’s sitting there she wonders, what’s she’s going to do now. But she assures her dog, that as long, as the two of them are together, trough bad and good weather, they don’t have to worry about a thing.

29: ‘Funhouse’ by P!nk

After having rekindled the flame in their marriage, Pink and Brad’s house and life became a fun house. They loved each other and were happy with their life, their home and lake. They even had a dog.

Pink didn’t find out about Brad’s secret, and what he had done to keep it before they had been married for a long while and not before it was too late. Not before They were in the house, dressed as clowns in order to be disguised.

They came at different times, while Brad wasn’t there, slowly torturing Pink with information about what Brad had done, echoing voices laughing from behind locked doors.

Their campaign began working. Slowly, like a tickle turns into a rash, Pink began hating Brad. She felt haunted by the evil clowns. One day it became too much. She was all alone. She danced around, watching the photos depicting the lie, she had been living, suddenly noticing a taunting smirk on Brad’s face. This home was already a museum full of ash, so she decided to burn it down. She would rather live out on the street than continue living in this haunted memory of their happy life. She moved out her stuff with the help of her dance crew (known as Movers and Maids) and broke everything else: tore down the photos, mangled the key, tore down the drapes and broke the plates. She counted down and laughed as she dropped the match: ”9, 8, 7, 6, 5, 4, 3, 2, 1, fun”.

She would find a new place to live, while Brad would think she died in the flames.
