2018, chapter 25: ‘True Love’ by P!nk (feat. Lily Allen) (nr. 137)

Taylor is trying to convince the man she loves and has been with for years to treat her better. She believes herself too good for his neglect of her.

What Will hears is that she believes herself too good for him, and what was an honest attempt at communication, he sees as the beginning of another fight. Taylor almost gets pulled in, and gets angry, but pulls herself back enough to continue her attempt for honest communication – just in an angry tone of voice. Through gritted teeth and insults, she tells him that despite how mean he can be, she truly loves him. She’s the only man she has ever truly loved. She hates him so much, it must be real love because no one else can break her heart like he can. She wants to hug him and wrap her hands around his neck at the same time.

All she’s asking is that he thinks about her feelings and is a bit more romantic.

2018, chapter 22: ‘Told You So’ by Paramore (nr. 134)

Two girls have gone to a bar. One of them, who calls herself Chainsmoker, is meeting one of the bartenders. She is completely smitten with the bartender. She tells to the other girl, who calls herself Little Mix, that this might become an actual relationship.

Little Mix is not impressed. This is exactly what they decided to leave behind some years ago, and now Chainsmoker has given up, and just like everyone in this world is following the norms.

Chainsmoker argues that one relationship doesn’t make for a betrayal of all of their ideals. She reminds Little Mix that she has slipped up many times before, and Chainsmoker helped her out of it.

Little Mix reminds her that she at least took the criticism into consideration and tried to be cool about it, even when Chainsmoker seemed to enjoy being right when Little Mix was wrong. Even now, when the roles have been reversed, she is trying to be calm and Chainsmoker is too passionate to listen to reason.

2018, chapter 21: ‘ Ain’t Your Mama’ by Jennifer Lopez (nr. 133)

Will and Taylor have a rocky relationship history. They’re currently together and not particularly happy.

Will is always at the computer. He has become too comfortable. Taylor does all the housework. This is getting on her nerves. One day, he accidentally calls her “mama” – and that is the tipping point. And if he won’t help out on his own, she can force him to with magic

… But she doesn’t want to. She has seen how wrong that can go. All she can really do is tell him. So she tells him that things have to change. That he has to get to work on time, stop playing video games, and help out with the cooking and the laundry. She is not his mama and does not want to be treated like she is. She’s too good for that, and he is damn lucky to have her. She tells him that she misses when they were crazy in love with each other and wishes they could go back to that.

2018, chapter 18: ‘Sick Boy’ by The Chainsmokers (nr. 130)

Alan is a young man now. His family life is complicated and rather dysfunctional. His parents, both proud people who don’t give up, are always fighting, but never leave each other. Alan gives himself credit for that. He has kept them together by being overly compassionate towards them.

This is not normal nor healthy. This is realised by everyone around him. They tell him to get away from all that.  They lie and tell him, that he’s not actually helping them. A fairytale to get him to give up. But he knows what he’s in the middle of. He chooses to live in this prison, and just because they don’t have the guts to do that, doesn’t mean that he shouldn’t. And they overreact to even the smallest fight. They should see how bad it gets at home…

It’s not like they care anyway. They just like to watch how his family interacts and call him “the sick boy” behind his back. Suit themselves.

2018, chapter 13: ‘Please Don’t Leave Me’ by P!nk (nr. 125)

Will and Taylor have a complicated history. They have just gotten back together, and they’re back to fighting.

Will, who has kicked Taylor out countless times, is yelling insults louder and meaner than ever, still hurting from the time that she seemed to have moved on and was dating someone else.

Taylor has realised herself that she has never taken this drastic measures as taking his free will before. Even now she is angry at him for tricking her and is being downright nasty towards him.

Their relationship has become a contest. The one that wins will be the one that hits the hardest. Each insists they don’t need the other. And since both of these people are rather powerful, that competition could get scary, if taken too far.

In the end, though, they apologise, say that they really do need the other, because they’re the perfect punching bag. So each makes sure to tell the other how beautiful they are and beg them not to leave.

92: ‘She’s Out Of Her Mind’ by blink 182

Will and Taylor have always had an on again/off again relationship. After they skip their latest breakup, they just stop breaking up.  And being together for a longer stretch of time means that surfaces start falling away.

Taylor stops being Will’s perfect dream girl and starts being genuine: An antisocial girl, who likes Bauhaus and is a little crazy sometimes. Not the batshit-crazy jealous woman, she turns into just before their breakups, she just loses her head sometimes. And she’s self-aware enough to apologise for it. And Will finds that he actually really likes the real Taylor.

Taylor sees a deeper layer of Will too. Perhaps a bit deeper than Will himself sees. She sees him working hard on his studies, but he doesn’t seem passionate about it. And she’s worried about him. So one night she tries to tell him that, but it turns into a fight, during which she calls him a know-it-all and he argues that by being a doctor he would help people, so so what if he doesn’t love every moment of his studies? In the end, she admits to having lost her head a bit and apologises.
