This is the last chapter of this particular story. Starting next week I begin a new one in the same universe, possibly involving some of the same characters (think sequel). I do this to keep some kind of focus. Merry Christmas and happy New Year.

2018, chapter 46: ‘Better When I’m Dancing’ by Meghan Trainor (nr. 158)

Chainsmoker is falling apart from magically controlling an army. Her co-leader, Little Mix, has had a much easier time and has not noticed how it has affected her friend. So when she finds Chainsmoker falling apart by herself, she tries to pull her back together by cheering her up. And since dancing always makes Little Mix feel better, she suggests that they go dancing like they used to.

They can still run the revolution together and Chainsmoker can stay in control. And while Chainsmoker isn’t the best dancer, Little Mix is sure it’ll make her feel better – be therefore be better in general.

2018, chapter 45: ‘Before He Cheats’ by Carrie Underwood (nr. 157)

Carrie has lost her husband. He was the one to leave her, but it was not a surprise to her. She knew he was cheating on her.

It had led her to stand outside a bar he had gone into.

She thought about how he was probably slow dancing with a bleached-blond tramp, and she was probably getting frisky. He was probably buying her some fruity little drink ’cause she couldn’t shoot whiskey. Then he was probably up behind her with a pool stick, showing her how to shoot a combo. She was probably up singing some white-trash version of Shania karaoke. She was probably saying “I’m drunk”, making him think, he was gonna get lucky. So he was probably dabbing on 3 dollars worth of that bathroom Polo right now…

She was furious and looking for revenge. So she dug her keys into the side of his pretty little souped-up four-wheel drive and carved her name into his leather seats. She took a Louisville slugger to both headlights and slashed a hole in all four tires.

She smiled to herself. Maybe next time he’d think before he cheated. She might have saved the next girl a little trouble from him. At the very least, he wouldn’t cheat on her again.

2018, chapter 44: ‘So What’ by P!nk (nr. 156)

A marriage has ended. And the wife is ecstatic, even though he was the one to leave. She feels free from him. She’s a rock star. She doesn’t need him. She’ll have more fun without him. She’s gonna go out, get in trouble and start a fight.  She’s alright, just fine, and he’s just a tool anyway…

She goes out. She’s supposed to have a table, but they gave it away to Jessica Simps. No matter. She’ll sit with her long-time friend, Eminem, whom she lovingly calls Drum Boy.

She wonders if her ex will hear her sing about him on the radio and react violently. He might even kill someone. She’d certainly be in trouble. They’re all gonna get in a fight!

She’s not worried though. She can handle him.

She sinks into sadness, thinking about how he was never there. How did she not notice that earlier? She gave him life, her all… He wanted everything for nothing.

But so what? She’s just fine and neither wants nor needs him tonight.

2018, chapter 43: ‘Week Without You’ by Miley Cyrus (nr. 155)

A war needs armies to fight them. An army needs motivation. Chainsmoker is providing said motivation, but it’s weighing on her. And her troops feel her control slip. They start to see her as commanding and having a bad attitude and keeping them from the freedom they once had. Do what they want, kiss who they want, wear what they want. Chainsmokers magic is strong, so they don’t stray. The time before her feels so long ago and they remember how she made them feel good, even if she doesn’t now. They would miss her, if she was gone.

2018, chapter 42: ‘Too Good At Goodbyes’ by Sam Smith (nr. 154)

Will is trying to get Taylor back.

Taylor isn’t interested: “You must think that I’m stupid. You must think that I’m a fool. You must think that I’m new to this. But I have seen this all before.

I’m never gonna let you close to me, even though you mean the most to me, ’cause every time I open up, it hurts. So I’m never gonna get too close to you, even when I mean the most to you, in case you go and leave me in the dirt.

I know you’re thinking I’m heartless. I know you’re thinking I’m cold. I’m just protecting my innocence. I’m just protecting my soul. Every time you hurt me, the less I cry. Every time you leave me, the quicker these tears dry. Every time you walk out, the less I love you. Baby, we don’t stand a chance, it’s sad but it’s true.”

She says goodbye again, having gotten way too good at it.

Will is shocked. She isn’t supposed to remember the old timeline

Chainsmoker is the leader of an army. She controls her troops with magic, and it’s weighing on her.

But she believes in her cause and gladly carries this burden. She can fake a smile, force a laugh and generally pretend she is okay and be the strong leader if it frees her people.

But she is only human. And one day she’s had enough. One day she is listening to her demons and suddenly it feels like she has knives in her heart. She falls apart…
