2018, chapter 28: ‘Cowboy Casanova’ by Carrie Underwood (nr. 140)

Two girls have decided to avoid attachment (financial as well as romantic). Little Mix lives up to it. Chainsmoker, on the other hand, has been less successful. She’s in a relationship with a bartender. She has kept the relationship loose and tries to get him to stop working, both with very little success.

Her friend knows this and tries to talk her out of dating him. She gets his appeal, she’s been there before, but Chainsmoker has to realise that he is a disease holding her down and keeping her from being free. She’s addicted. So much so that she clearly isn’t hearing a word Little Mix is saying. So Little Mix just has to try again.

She calls him a liar, a snake with blue eyes, who will tell Chainsmoker anything she wants to hear. She calls him a good-time cowboy Casanova and questions what he actually does when he’s a work behind the bar. He probably flirts with the girls there and Chainsmoker should run for her life to save herself from hurt.

2018, chapter 27: ‘Better Man’ by Little Big Town (nr. 139)

Will and Taylor have had different problems throughout their relationship. In the beginning, cursed magic that made her have to sabotage all of her relationships, including the one with Will. But they managed through that, and there were good times. And Taylor wants those good times back. She still loves him. And he loves her.

He wants to give her a gift. He has worked on a way to control time. And he has now reached a level at which he could erase things from history. In this case, the event that made a young innocent girl into a woman magically controlling men. He changes time so that she never gets her magical abilities, hoping that it’ll clear up their relationship.

Fortunately for him, the relationship still happens. And in the beginning, it is a lot more stable. They are themselves from the start and don’t break up over and over again

Unfortunately, he forgot that he himself was part of the problem. His dislike of change and how he would respond to it, hand in hand with the very focus that led him through med school and later to learn how to control time (eventually leading to his neglecting Taylor). His strong jealousy didn’t make things better either.

So when the changes are made, he finds himself in a timeline in which she has left him. Without her powers, his desire to be in control got out of hand and he damaged her permanently, before finally driving her away. He took for granted that she would never leave and thus talked down to her and pushed away any loving concerns she tried to bring his attention to. But after a while, she had enough. If he didn’t know what he had, he could be without. She gave him her best, and he couldn’t say the same.

What he doesn’t know is that she still misses him, even though she knows leaving was the best thing to do and that she is better off on her own.

She still wishes he could have been a better man. They might still have been in love. He could have been the one.

Failing that, she wishes she could forget the magic, so she wouldn’t still feel his arms around her in the middle of the night.

2018, chapter 26: ‘Work From Home’ by Fifth Harmony feat. Ty Dolla $ign (nr. 138)

A movement promoting detachment from society has become destructive. The beginning of the expansion was more humble; one of the two founders wanting to include her new “boyfriend” (which was actually against their ideals). That founder, who went by the nickname Chainsmoker, wasn’t too concerned with that, but since the other founder, Little Mix, was, she kept the relationship with the Ty (her lover) purely sexual.

So far she has kept her word. They are however clearly exclusive (she is his ‘bae’ and he is her ‘boo’). And moreover, Ty is still working as a bartender, which is firmly against the ideal Chainsmoker cares the most about. She tries to convince him to stop working there by jokingly using work as a metaphor for sex to remind how else he could spend his nights. She sends him pictures of her waiting for him naked at home and writes that they can work from home. She’s hoping that the pictures will get him fired, even if it doesn’t convince him. And he is certainly tempted and also uses the work metaphor when he does come home – but is neither convinced to stop working nor fired.

2018, chapter 25: ‘True Love’ by P!nk (feat. Lily Allen) (nr. 137)

Taylor is trying to convince the man she loves and has been with for years to treat her better. She believes herself too good for his neglect of her.

What Will hears is that she believes herself too good for him, and what was an honest attempt at communication, he sees as the beginning of another fight. Taylor almost gets pulled in, and gets angry, but pulls herself back enough to continue her attempt for honest communication – just in an angry tone of voice. Through gritted teeth and insults, she tells him that despite how mean he can be, she truly loves him. She’s the only man she has ever truly loved. She hates him so much, it must be real love because no one else can break her heart like he can. She wants to hug him and wrap her hands around his neck at the same time.

All she’s asking is that he thinks about her feelings and is a bit more romantic.
